Dr. Joseph M. Cleary Center Director, National Renewable Energy Lab, US Department of Energy, USA

Mike Cleary began his position as NREL's Center Director for the National Bioenergy Center in October 2007. Mike has more than 25 years of experience in research and management in the life sciences and industrial biotechnology fields, and through his involvement in several professional organizations brings numerous contacts and professional relationships to NREL.
Before coming to NREL, Mike was Executive Division Director of Sciences R& D at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego, where he initiated interdisciplinary research projects for life science programs with biomedical and biology researchers at university, government and independent research institutions, including one recent project with NREL on the molecular dynamic modeling of cellulose. His prior industry experience includes 20 years in biotechnology research and management at CP Kelco, Inc., and Merck and Monsanto. While at CP Kelco, Mike worked with a team of researchers and life scientists who made a significant contribution to science by genetically engineering microbes for commercial production of an industrial product.
